Description

Upper House is a Grade II* listed building featuring a hall range that was originally open to the roof, flanked by outer cross wings. It has a gabled, storeyed porch on the north side and a gabled staircase projection at the rear angle. The building is two storeys high, with white-washed rubble walls that show some repairs, and slate roofs. A projecting brick stack serves the hall range, and the plain bargeboards add to its simplicity. The east front has three windows, with swept dormers and a modern glazed door accessed by steps.

Inside, the remarkable interior includes a two-bay medieval hall with a central base-cruck and a spere-truss in the cross passage. A 17th-century floor and central chimney have been inserted. The detailing of the truss blades is exceptional, featuring chamfered and checked angles, feathered and broach stops, among other features. The roof structure is spectacular, showcasing cornice mouldings on the arcade plates, curved windbraces, multiple dowels, and arch-braces supporting cambered collars.

The medieval solar cross-range has been divided into two storeys and features cambered tie-beams with feathered stop chamfers. A 17th-century post and panel screen is located at the solar end of the hall, and a 17th-century staircase has been added on the south side, complete with ball finial newels and turned balusters. The downhill east cross-range has been significantly rebuilt in the 17th century, featuring chamfered beams and a large open fireplace at the north end. Additionally, there are 18th-century wall paintings against the spere truss.
