Description
Glantanat Uchaf is a farmhouse dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, with an L-shaped layout. The main range runs east to west, and a crosswing extends north at the east end. The north, west, and north-facing elevations of the crosswing are rendered, likely over timber framing. A small section of close-studded timber framing appears in the top east corner of the rear (south) elevation of the main range. The remainder of the house is now finished with local shaley stonework, in a somewhat regular, quasi-coursed arrangement, including later extensions on the south side. The roof is covered with regularly coursed restored slate, with a tile ridge. A large, rendered and whitened chimney stands in the centre of the main range. A substantial stone chimney on the east side of the north wing, noticeably battered in profile, passes through a gabled dormer-like section. A third chimney at the south east corner of the main range has been shortened and integrated into the roof slope.
A 1½-storey south wing is built of stone with old render, and has a small slate roof. A stone lean-to is attached to its south end, and a wider lean-to, partly of timber construction, abuts the west side of the main south wall.
The north-facing front of the house has been updated with small-pane windows containing metal glazing bars, typical of the late 19th century. To the left of the front door are three windows aligned vertically. Above the door is another window, and to the right, below, is a two-light window. The adjacent west elevation of the crosswing features a door to the right, a three-light window to the left, and a two-light window above, which are not vertically aligned. The gable of this crosswing has a small-pane timber mullion and transom window of three lights. A notable feature of the north front is the main door, set within a substantial, projecting, moulded frame with an ovolo-moulded inner edge. The door itself is boarded and nail-studded, at least 1050 mm wide, and has ornamental wrought iron hinges.
The east gable of the main range has two windows and an attic light aligned centrally; four other small windows are randomly positioned in the adjacent wing.
The ground floor plan follows a baffle-entry layout, incorporating a hall and parlour with fireplaces opposite the entrance. The hall features chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
