Description

The building is a barn, stable, cart-shed, and peat store located at Cwm Biga, dating from the 19th century. It features a lofted range constructed of random stone, topped with a renewed slate roof. The barn is on the left and has a central raised entrance accessed by steps, which contains a single boarded door set beneath a segmental brick head, flanked by ventilation slits. To the right of the barn is a stable with split doors under a concrete lintel, and a boarded loft hatch above. Further right is a cart-bay with double boarded doors under a timber lintel, next to a large single door that leads into the peat store. Above the cart-shed and peat-store doors, the range is weather-boarded, with a loft hatch above the cart-shed.

At the western end, there is a lean-to clad in corrugated iron, featuring double end doors. The rear wall of the barn is slightly inset and was originally timber-framed on a stone plinth; the lower part has been mainly rebuilt in breeze block, with weather-boarding above. There is a single door to the threshing bay, offset to the right, and a loft hatch to its left. The outer bays of the barn have short single doorways, with the right one featuring split doors. The peat store has a large ventilated opening with timber slats.

The barn comprises three bays with pegged tie-beam trusses that include angled struts. The western truss is made from reused timbers, and the principal rafters are crafted from cruck blades, with the northern rafter being upside down and curving slightly outwards. The central threshing bay has planked partitions supported by vertical posts beneath the tie-beams and a wood planked floor. To the right of the barn is a pony stable with two stalls divided by an original boarded partition, complete with a manger and hayrack, and original cobbled and pitched stone floors. The peat store is open to the roof, with a floor primarily of bare underlying rock and a full-height boarded partition to the left, which is partly reconstructed.
