Description
Lower Woodhouse Farmhouse is a 2-storey building with a 3-window east front, constructed in two parts. The structure features some coursed rubble, a raised gable on the left, and a taller cross-range on the right. The slate roofs have tiled ridges at various levels, and there is an unusual upward curve to the roofline over the central bay where the frontage steps down. A central brick stack is present. The left gable, which was formerly jettied in the 16th century, is supported by carved brackets, although the timber frame is now concealed by a stone ground floor and a roughcast brick first floor. There is a loft ventilator opening under the right gable, with cambered headed openings below, including a cellar entrance below the ground floor. A late 18th century to early 19th century Gothic window is located on the ground floor.
The tall cross-range, which faces north down the hill, has rubble walls and is supported by twin raked buttresses. It features two lateral chimney breasts, one of which is heightened in brick to the left, while the other is roughcast. The north wall has cross-frame windows to the right, and the south wall has modern metal frame windows with some blocked openings. There is evidence of a break in the plinth at an angle to the rear opposite the main entrance, suggesting a blocked cross-passage.
Inside, the farmhouse retains much of its 17th century detailing, including feather-stopped chamfered beams in the main rooms and kitchen. The ground floor left room features counter-changing joists, a wide fireplace with a massive timber lintel, and a stone flagged floor, along with wide oak floorboards, timber studding, and panelled doors. The cross-range has a 17th century roof, while the left side has an earlier roof, both featuring ridge-beams and two-tier purlins.
