Description

Maerdy Limekilns are stone structures that have been re-lined. Each kiln features two or more brick-arched stone-walled drawing tunnels leading to the hearth at the base of the burning cone. Kilns two and three are connected by a low brick arch for the storage of implements. The charging holes and the upper parts of the cones, which were typically accessed by a stone ramp from canal level, have been removed, leaving only the lower parts and the facade wall intact. The associated cottages have also been demolished. Historical records indicate that the kilns were operated by John Lewis and Samuel Williams in 1845.
