Description
Plas Nant-y-Meichiaid is a farmhouse dating from the 16th to 17th century. It was originally timber framed with colourwashed brick infilling and brick stacks, but the ground floor framing on the main range has been replaced with brick. The building has a Type C plan, featuring a two-room fully framed heated cross wing at the eastern end, and a later lean-to along the original rear southern side that contains the current entrance.
The external porch has a boarded door, and there are three light 20th-century timber windows. A major external stone stack with offsets serves the parlour, which occupies the front section of the cross wing. The timber framed section is four panels high, with corner braces in the wing, which is six panels wide. Above the tie beam, there are queen posts supporting a collar and double purlin roof. The side and rear walls of the cross wing are made of stone, with the major stack offsetting, and the rear gable of the wing is framed.
Inside, the main range features a large central living hall with two parallel chamfered spine beams. A door at the upper end leads to an internal stair hall in the cross wing, which has a dog-leg stair and a small unglazed balustered window looking back into the living room. There are depressed ogee-shaped doorheads leading into a service room and into the heated parlour in the projecting wing, although the fireplace in the parlour is now blocked. There is a blocked ogee doorhead from the parlour into the service room, and an additional service room has been added, extending the wing to the north. The main stack has a heavy timber fire lintel in the living hall and in the former kitchen at the eastern end of the main range, which also includes a boiler and a former secondary stair to the upper floor. The upper floor features a panelled built-in cupboard.
