Description
Gwaelod Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse that was originally timber framed with colourwashed brick infilling. Some of the brick has now been replaced with stone, and the parlour end has been rebuilt in stone. The farmhouse features a slate roof and is two storeys high, following a type C lobby entry plan. At the north end, there is a living room and an inner room, while the south end has a parlour that is now subdivided lengthwise. A stone service room, likely a bakehouse, has been added at the rear, featuring two bays and a gable stack, along with various rear outshuts.
The farmhouse has a brick gabled porch. The framing on the north gable end consists of three panels high, while the main east front has been replaced with stone up to the first floor level and wraps around the end. The parlour end is roofed as a short cross wing with two bays divided by a central truss, which is likely a rebuild of an original in-line timber bay. The windows throughout are from the 20th century, and the cross wing has projecting stone labels on all three sides.
The entrance is located opposite the stack, with an oven accessible from the lobby. The main rooms feature two parallel chamfered spine beams. The partition for the inner room has been removed to enlarge the living room, leaving a cross beam in place. A 17th-century staircase is located behind the stack, with access from the living room that splits to each upper chamber. The staircase has square newels and moulded handrails, although the splat balusters have been replaced. The trusses feature three queen struts to the collar and angled struts to the principals, marked with a chisel. The cross wing is reported to have some framing on the end wall behind the plaster.
