Description

Cwm Farmhouse is a building that features a 16th-century cross-wing and an 18th-century main range, constructed on the site of an earlier hall house. An 18th-century stable at the northeast end has been incorporated into the dwelling. The farmhouse has two storeys and is primarily built of rubble stone, with the wing retaining a small area of close-set framing. The stonework of the 18th-century front elevation is made up of coursed squared blocks, and the roofs are covered with stone tiles and slates. There are eaves dormers on both the front and rear, with the central front dormer situated under a wide pediment gable. A large rubble ridge stack with a moulded cap is present, along with a rubble eaves stack on the northwest side. The upper section of a large rubble stack on the southwest side of the wing was removed in the 1970s.

The southeast front features a central door with an overlight, which is a renewed panel door, flanked by two 19th-century windows that are three-light and set under flat voussoir lintels with keyblocks. Similar lintels can be found above random windows on the rear walls, while modern openings have been made to the former stable end.

Inside, the wing showcases exposed close-set timber framing with heavy jowelled posts. There is a partition truss and an end truss that have collars with close-set infill. On the ground floor, part of a square panel partition is present, set beneath a deep chamfered rail, which includes one side of a mason's mitred door frame. The 18th-century portion of the house features six-panel doors with thumb latches and H/L hinges. Additionally, there is a wide timber fire surround with ogee mouldings and a spit rack in the former kitchen.
