Description
Lower Hengoed is a late medieval or sub-medieval cruck framed hall-house with a storeyed end, featuring remodelling from the 18th and 19th centuries. This includes the raising of the roof at the southeast end and the addition of dairy and service lean-tos at the rear. The building has two storeys, is rendered, and has slate roofs with two end stacks and a central ridge stack. A timber lean-to porch is present, along with 19th and 20th century casement windows. The front door is a richly moulded four-panel design, raised and fielded.
Significant portions of the original structure remain, including two full cruck trusses. One is a closed truss situated between the hall and the storeyed end, while the other is an arch-braced central cruck featuring quatrefoil and trefoil cusping and soffit moulding. Remains of the north end cruck are also visible. The trusses are smoke-blackened, with a butted apex and notched lap jointed collar, and some smoke-blackened purlins are still intact. Much of the original rear wall framing is preserved in large square panels. Part of the ceiling in the storeyed end is exposed, showcasing close-set deep chamfered joists of heavy section with straight cut stops. The former hall bays are ceiled with thinner scroll stopped beams. An inserted stack has been constructed against the central cruck and is integrated into a stone wall that spans the width of the house. Additional later features include four-panel and six-panel doors, as well as a simple stair with a squared newel and stick balusters.
