Description

Stone House is a two-storey building from the mid-18th century, featuring a hipped main range with a tall attic storey. At the rear, there is a contemporary kitchen wing with a gabled catslide roof. Adjoining this is a later 19th-century service range that includes a large dairy and has a lower gabled roof line. The exterior is constructed of rubble stone in neat coursed blocks, with ashlar quoins on the front elevations, a platt band, and a plinth. The windows have flat voussoir lintels with keyblocks, and there are seven flush-set 12-pane sash windows, which may date from the 19th century, featuring slender glazing bars and moulded frames. The hall lights and corresponding windows above are narrower eight-pane sashes. The central entrance has a split door with six raised and fielded panels, a moulded frame, and a slate gabled canopy supported by large curved consoles. The roof includes three dormers with hipped roofs, and the slate roof is topped with distinctive tall stone chimney stacks that have moulded caps, three located at the gable ends and a fourth serving what appears to be a later service wing. Some modern windows have been replaced on the rear elevations.

Inside, the house boasts a fine period interior with a largely original layout. Two parlours flank a large stair hall, with the smaller parlour on the right allowing space for the dairy behind it. The interior features dado panelling, panelled shutters, and window reveals of varying dates, along with some two-panel raised and fielded doors and four-panel doors with ogee architraving and H/L hinges. There are two original fire surrounds with moulded cornices, and the bedroom fireplace includes an early cast iron grate. The staircase is of good quality, comprising two flights with a deep moulded ramped handrail, slender turned balusters, an open string with carved tread ends and moulded nosings, and a turned, fluted newel with a squared cap. The underside of the staircase is adorned with raised and fielded panelling. The original kitchen features a blocked open fireplace with a voussoir lintel and keyblock, along with chamfered beams.
