Description
Forge House is a two-storey house dating from the 18th century, featuring white painted stucco and a slate roof with small painted brick end stacks. The front has three windows, with sashes that have 9 panes above and 12 panes below, and a central door. The windows have slate sills.
The entrance includes a six-panel door with two flush panels and four sunk panels, topped by a 4-pane overlight framed by timber pilasters that support a shallow open pediment. The roof has three skylights. The left end wall has a renewed 9-pane sash window on the ground floor and a small loft light. The rear wall shows some brickwork on the ground floor, located behind a recess in the front left room. The left rear wing features a 16-pane sash window on each floor within a brick surround, along with a door to the right. There is a brick end-wall stack and a lean-to on the end wall, as well as a single-storey range that runs at right angles to the rear wing.
Inside, the entrance passage leads to stairs on the right, positioned behind the right front room. The house has six-panel doors throughout. The stairs curve to return over the front hall. The left room has deep alcoves on either side of the chimney breast, a fireplace with a new lintel, and an elliptical-arched recess on the rear wall, with shutters on the window. The right room also features shutters. The rear wing has a 16-pane sash window with panelled shutters. A reset stone inscribed with "Sept 1785" is believed to have originated from another location on the site. Additionally, there is a bread oven with an iron door marked "Williams & Croppage, Brecon."
