Description
Broomfield is a distinguished gentry house built from painted pebbledashed rubble stone, topped with slate roofs. The structure is a square block featuring a central three-storey section with a basement and three window bays, flanked by two-storey wings—one with three bays and the southwest wing with two bays that houses the main entrance. The entrance is highlighted by a fluted Tuscan columned portico with a modillion cornice, accessible via a flight of nine stone steps from the side. The entrance includes a round-headed panelled door reveal, part-margin glazed doors, and a radial fanlight.
The main floor windows of the central block are tripartite, set within segmental-headed openings that feature plaster roundels in the tympana and recessed aprons below. The first-floor windows are twelve-paned sashes, showcasing much crown glass. Above, a cornice with a frieze adorned with garlands precedes the attic storey, which contains round-headed sash windows and wide paired modillion eaves.
The wings on either side also feature twelve-pane sashes, with a carriage door on the left wing. There are additional panelled doors at the rear and at the northeast end within panelled reveals, including one added by Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe, along with some round-headed windows, one of which has coloured glass.
Inside, the main block includes a drawing room and a study, with service rooms located in a second range at the rear. The drawing room is distinguished by a cornice with a 'Welsh Cornice' applied to the ceiling, and it features panelled doors and panelled shutters on the windows.
