Description
The former slate enamelling workshop at Rhiw'r Gwreiddyn is a long single-storey building constructed from coursed slate blocks and topped with a corrugated iron roof. At the northern end, there is a stone stack. The central entrance features a boarded door with an overlight, flanked by window openings. To the right, there is a large-pane wooden window, while the left window has been enlarged to accommodate a 3-light wooden casement. Near the right end, there is an entrance with double metal doors, and a single doorway on the far left has been infilled with stone. The roof has one small skylight and two steel flues.
On the northern gable end, there is a 20th-century panelled door to the left that leads into the kilns, and a firebox to the right of centre, which is now partially below ground level. The rear (eastern) wall is built into the bank, where two added enamelling kilns project from the wall, constructed of coursed slate blocks with a flat roof that is in poor condition and covered in grass. Two flues lead to fireboxes on the western side, made of yellow firebrick with arched heads. The rear wall of the main range has a boarded door immediately to the right of the kiln projection. A stub wall on the right side and another at the northeast angle of the building seem to mark the location of an earlier lean-to structure. Inside this area, there is a section of yellow and red brick with a flue to a firebox at the base, which has a cast iron door. To the right of this is a 2-light wooden casement that has replaced a door. At the far left end of this elevation, there is a single doorway covered by corrugated iron sheeting, along with evidence of a former lean-to structure. A four-pane window, which has replaced a door, is offset to the left of the southern gable end.
The interior features a four-bay open space supported by substantial sawn King-post trusses with diagonal struts. The tie beams are supported in the walls beneath the wall-plate level. At the northern end, two doorways lead into the slate enamelling kilns, which are said to contain fireboxes and hooks. The doorway to the right has double slate doors, while the one to the left is infilled with breeze blocks. In the centre of this wall, at a higher level, there is a small opening infilled with brick. Two additional doorways with slate double doors, located towards the left of the eastern wall, provide access to the external enamelling kilns.
