Description
Maespoeth Locomotive Shed and attached workshops is a building constructed of slate, featuring 13-inch pale brick arches for its windows and openings, topped with a slate roof. The structure has nine bays on each side, each bay containing tall windows beneath segmental brick arches, with six large panes of glass and slate sills. The eaves project outward. At the north end, there are three large flying buttresses made of slate, supporting a pent roof. The south end has a 2-meter wide opening directly above the railway line, framed by a high semi-circular brick arch, with a tall and narrow round-headed window to the left, which is now blocked. Attached to this end is a single-storey workshop range.
Each bay is supported by king-post and raking strut trusses, which hold up two purlins and a ridge piece. A tramway line runs the full length of the east side and includes two inspection pits. Originally, a large water cistern was integrated into the roof, with a delivery pipe leading to a water column positioned externally against the main line, although this is now lost. A coach shed that once stood in front of the locomotive shed has been removed, along with the adjacent ground frame.
