Description

Capel Salem, including the front wall and railings, is a chapel built in a simple Classical style, constructed of rock-faced quarry slate with contrasting features in hard grey slate. The facade features six tall pilasters made of grey slate, with the central four slightly projecting forward. These rise to a simple block string course that supports the pediment and bracketed eaves. At the center, there is a wide pair of false-fielded and panelled doors topped with a two-pane overlight. Above the doors is a round-headed window with margin glazing in blue and yellow. On either side of the door are shorter, similar windows, and elongated windows are found in the end bays. Each side of the chapel has three round-headed windows, each with a central hopper vent, while there are no windows on the west end.

The front wall facing the street consists of rock-faced stone piers that rise from a low wall, featuring a central pair of gates. The railings and gates have arrow terminals, and the gates include dog rails.

Inside, the chapel is rectangular with plastered walls above a matchboarded dado. The flat ceiling is divided into diagonally boarded compartments by moulded ceiling beams, and the outer sides are coved above a moulded cornice. A gallery with five tiers of raked pews runs around three sides, with splayed corners, supported by cast iron columns that are elaborately panelled at the front and held up by modillion brackets. The west end contains the pulpit, which is raised and accessed by balustered stairs. The pulpit has an octagonal front, with a bookstand and brass light fittings on either side. Below the pulpit is the set fawr, enclosed in a panelled area. Behind the pulpit is a large panelled reredos, with the central section rising higher to feature a modillion cornice and shell cresting.
