Description

Church House Farmhouse is a two-and-a-half storey main section with a two storey cross wing at the east end. The building is constructed of rubble stone with some later brick dressings and features a slate roof. There is a tall projecting rubble stack offset to the wing and another rubble stack at the rear of the main part. The wing has been largely rebuilt in stone, although a small area of square panel timber framing remains. The rear gable end is encased in iron sheeting, while the front gable end has two 16-pane sash windows under later heads. The main section of the house has a three-window range with a central gabled dormer, and the front door is located in the corner adjacent to the wing. There is a later timber porch and a wide-boarded front door with strap hinges, along with modern windows under cambered heads. At the rear, there are late 19th century sash windows.

Inside, the main section includes a large entrance hall with a blocked fireplace on the rear wall, a kitchen, and a dairy. The hall and kitchen feature plain squared beams, while the dairy has deep chamfered beams. There are modern stairs leading up. The wing is divided into three rooms, with rear stairs leading off through a trimmed beam. The main room has a substantial beamed ceiling arranged in a counterchanged pattern, with deep chamfered beams and joists that feature diamond cut stops, and a broach to the beams (only one section of joists is exposed). There is a small stone jamb fireplace with a renewed lintel. Four 18th century six-panel raised and fielded panel doors with modified H/L hinges are present. The exposed wall posts of the timber framed wing are massive, with a thickened top section that projects into the rooms. A small area of exposed wall framing shows a diagonal corner brace from post to wallplate.
