Description

Baynham Hall is an early 18th-century L-plan building featuring a two-storey range and a later one-and-a-half storey service wing on the left. The front elevation is made of well-cut rubble blocks, with a plinth and platt band, a wide pediment, and a hipped stone tile roof with boxed eaves. It has two projecting rubble end stacks with offsets, the right stack topped with a moulded cap. The central entrance consists of a door with eight raised and fielded panels, flanked by four windows on the ground floor and three on the first floor, all under flat voussoir heads. The ground floor windows are modern casements, while the first floor and attic windows feature original heavy chamfered frames but have renewed timber casements; the attic window is designed in a Venetian style. The left wing includes three eaves dormers and a large rubble stack with a bread oven at the rear. There is also a further granary wing that projects into the hillslope.

The building retains a largely unaltered plan and many period details. Inside, there is a wide staircase hall with a good quality staircase featuring slender turned balusters, a moulded handrail, a closed string, and a squared newel with corner mouldings. The front rooms include raised and fielded panelled window seats and doors, with six panels on the downstairs doors and four on the upstairs doors. The service wing contains heavy re-used beams and a large open fireplace with a cambered voussoir lintel, inset with brick for a range and copper.
