Description
The Oxford is an Edwardian freestyle building that consists of a row of four shops of varying sizes, with residential spaces above. The structure has five bays, with the central three being three stories high, while the outer bays are two stories with attics. It is constructed of brick with freestone detailing and features a slate roof with projecting eaves and a dentil soffit, along with a brick chimney stack on the right end. The building retains cast-iron rainwater goods, one of which is dated 1902.
The corners of the building have rusticated pilaster strips, and the upper storey between the central bays is framed. Shops numbered 2 and 3 have large plate-glass windows that reach the floor, supported by slender round mullions with Ionic capitals. Their entrances are set back in recesses with decorative tile floors. Each shop has a plain fascia above a dentil course and half-glazed panel doors topped with margin-lit overlights. There is a passage between Numbers 2 and 3 that leads to the rear of the building. Number 4 is wider and has a double-fronted design, featuring similar windows to Numbers 2 and 3, and in its recessed area with tiled flooring, it has double half-glazed doors under an overlight with glazing bars.
Number 4A has a classical style, showcasing an ashlar round-headed doorway and two windows, with brick below the sill. All openings are adorned with half columns featuring Ionic capitals and finely moulded arches with keystones. The door is panelled and topped with an overlight that has radiating glazing bars, while the fixed replacement windows also have original radial glazing. The fascia of Number 4A resembles that of Numbers 2 and 3.
Above the ground floor, the three central bays feature double-height canted oriel windows, though Number 4 has replacement uPVC windows. These oriel windows are topped with projecting pediments that have dentil soffits and are decorated with stucco cartouches featuring putti, with the central cartouche inscribed "The Oxford." The outer bays also have canted oriel windows on the first floor and flat-roofed two-light dormers. The right-hand gable end is finished with slate hanging. The building has not been inspected.
