Description
The chapel, built in the 1872-74, stands set back from the road midway between the Old Market Hall and Smithfield Street, and is the largest of the Llanidloes chapels. It is thought to have been designed by Rev William Jones. A hall at the rear may be earlier, possibly dating to the structure referenced in a 1843 registration application, and the building was restored between 1983 and 1986.
The chapel front has five windows and is advanced, taller, and features a pedimented central section. It is constructed of snecked rubble with freestone dressings, including a plinth band and quoins. The roofs are slate, featuring fishscale tiles to the hipped cross roofs over the outer bays. The pediment is topped with a weathervane and acroteria, repeated on flanking balustrades. A central roundel window sits within a semicircular headed architrave and bracket cornice. The windows are sash windows with marginal glazing bars. The three central windows are linked by a continuous stilted hoodmould with tall keystones over quatrefoil oculi, supported by cylindrical columns with grooved annulets and Corinthian carved capitals with impost bands. The windows in the outer bays are set within full-height round-arched recesses and feature bracket cills and impost bands, with a punched band between floors. A projecting open porch is centrally located, with channelled rustication and three round arches to the front and one to the sides. A panelled parapet, pierced over the outer arches and bearing an inscription to the centre, tops the porch, with nook shafts to the piers and detailing mirroring the capitals above. Paired entrances have panelled double doors, fanlights, and hoodmoulds. A stone memorial tablet, by R Jerman, is positioned between the entrances. A railed forecourt, with gates to either end and panelled stone gate piers, fronts the chapel. A single cast-iron lamp standard has been retained.
The side elevations have six bays, displaying windows mirroring those on the front. The left side is slate hung, while the right side is brick. The rear is slate hung, with a projection for the organ chamber. Extending slightly off centre to the rear is a seven-bay schoolroom and chapel hall, largely single-storey, with dividing pilasters to each bay. One side is slate hung, the other polychrome brick. Round-arched headed metal frame small pane windows and camber-headed lower windows are found at the rear. Boarded doors are also present. The rear gable has two chimney stacks, and attached is an L-shaped caretaker's house, with sash windows, a blue brick lean-to, and an iron gate with decorative finials, which opens onto a cobbled path.
The interior is classical, featuring a raked gallery intended to hold a congregation of over 1,000. The ceiling is divided into four main panels and smaller bordering panels, with deep ribs inset with arabesque carved ventilators. A large ceiling rose is at the centre, with smaller roses to the main panels. A modillion cornice is complemented by console brackets. The panelled gallery front rests on cast iron fluted columns with foliage carved capitals. A railed platform features imitation marble colonnettes. Iron trusses support the hall roof, and a fine ironwork balustrade runs along the raked gallery, below which is a panelled room.
The building contributes to the group value of the area.
