Description

Chapel House is a building dating from the 18th century, constructed of snecked rubble with freestone dressings. It has a five-window front, which is advanced, taller, and features a pedimented central section. The roofs are slate, with fishscale tiles to the hipped cross roofs over the outer bays. The pediment is ornamented with a weathervane and acroteria, which are repeated on flanking balustrades. A central, roundel window is within a semicircular headed architrave and bracket cornice. Sash windows are fitted with marginal glazing bars. Three central windows share a continuous stilted hoodmould with tall keystones over quatrefoil oculi; these are supported by cylindrical columns with grooved annulets and Corinthian carved capitals with impost bands. The outer bay windows are set within a full-height round arched recess and have bracket cills and impost bands in a similar style; a punched band runs between the floors. A projecting open porch is centrally located and features channelled rustication and three round arches to the front, with one to each side. The parapet is panelled, pierced over the outer arches, and bears an inscription to the centre. Nook shafts with annulets and capitals matching those elsewhere support the piers. Entrances are paired with panelled double doors, fanlights, and hoodmoulds; a stone memorial tablet by R Jerman is set between them. A railed forecourt is present with gates at either end and panelled stone gate piers, with one cast-iron lamp standard retained.

The side elevations are six bays wide with windows mirroring the front. The left side is slate hung, while the right is brick. The rear elevation is also slate hung, with a projection for the organ chamber. Extending slightly off-centre to the rear is a single-storey, seven-bay schoolroom and chapel hall, divided by pilasters in each bay, with the left side slate hung and the right polychrome brick. The rear features round-arched metal-framed small-pane windows and camber-headed lower windows, along with boarded doors. A rear gable end has two chimney stacks. Attached is a blue brick lean-to caretaker's house with slate hanging and some sash windows, with an iron gate featuring decorative finials opening onto a cobbled path.

The interior is designed in a classical style and includes a raked gallery intended to accommodate over 1,000 people. The ceiling is composed of four main panels and smaller bordering ones, with deep ribs inset with arabesque carved ventilators; a large ceiling rose is in the centre, with smaller roses to the main panels. A modillion cornice is present, with console brackets. The front of the panelled gallery is supported by cast iron fluted columns with foliage carved capitals. A railed platform with imitation marble colonnettes provides seating. Iron trusses support the hall roof, and a fine ironwork balustrade runs along the raked gallery, beneath which is a panelled room.
