Description
Lane Cottage is a building likely dating from the 18th century, which is reputed to have served as a Drovers Inn. It has been modernised in recent years, including the addition of new roof slates, windows, and stairs. The cottage is two storeys high and constructed from coursed rubble stone, which has been overpainted. Traces of blocked doors, windows, and former building lines are still visible. At the west end, there is a single-storey bay. The structure is a single range with a tall rubble lateral stack on the north side that has a brick upper section, and a low brick ridge stack located to the left of centre. The doors are boarded, and the windows are arranged irregularly, mostly featuring small panes in modern timber frames. There are remains of footings for a bay attached to the upper end.
The layout is somewhat difficult to interpret but seems to include part of a two-room dwelling at the upper end. Inside, there is a large internal stack with a fireplace that has a chamfered timber lintel, a step stop, and neat rubble jambs, along with a brick bread oven. The lower end of the cottage may have been converted from outbuildings. The interior features stud-wall partitions with diagonal bracing, incorporating re-used timbers. The central room contains an axial chamfered beam.
