Description
Graig Farmhouse is a 17th-century building that underwent refronting, with additions including a porch and dairy in 1861, as indicated by a painted date plaque on the porch. The porch wing also contains the staircase.
The farmhouse is two storeys high with a single pile plan, constructed from coursed rubble blocks and topped with a slate roof. It features bargeboards on the centrally-placed, gabled porch wing, boxed eaves, and deep verges. A central ridge stack has a modern brick upper. The front elevation has flat arch stone voussoir lintels above all openings, with a central modern door accompanied by a small plain overlight. The windows are all modern casements arranged in a regular pattern.
Originally, the farmhouse had a three-unit, lobby entry plan with large back-to-back fireplace openings leading to the central stack. The jambs are made of rubble, and the former 'hall' opening has been partially reduced with rubble stone and features a chamfered timber lintel with scroll stops. The hall and end room have wide chamfered axial beams that rest on an original plank and muntin screen partition. This screen includes slightly chamfered muntins and a chamfered head rail, with carpenters' marks visible at the base of the muntins. The roof was raised in 1861, lowering the pitch, and all the trusses have shouldered king posts, showing significant reuse of earlier roof timbers.
