Description
The Woodlands is a tall house from the late 18th to early 19th century, currently serving as an outdoor activities centre. It is constructed of rubble sandstone with quoined corners and features a hipped slate roof. The building has three storeys and a double pile plan, with a service building surrounding a yard at the rear. There are cellars beneath the front range.
The main southern front has a central niche, flanked by full-height tripartite sash windows that include radial fans in the spandrels. There are steps leading to the garden. The first floor has a plat band and 12-pane sash windows, while the second floor features 9-pane sashes. All window openings have slightly cambered stone arches and sills. The eaves are adorned with widely paired modillion brackets, and there are gable stacks along with an additional stack for the rear rooms.
On the western elevation, there is a door leading to the cross stair hall, topped by a tall 15-pane round-headed window. The narrower rear 'L'-shaped service range has two bays and three storeys. The main entrance is located on the eastern side, now accessed through a glazed porch with a hipped roof.
Inside, the front reception rooms feature interconnecting double doors set within a round arch, decorative cornices, and a marble fireplace. The building also includes extensive cellars.
