Description

Gungrog Farmhouse is a building that likely has origins dating back to the 16th century. Although the exterior is mostly made of brick, it is believed that the house was originally timber framed, with one surviving timber corner post located to the northeast. After a fire, the building was raised in height and re-roofed.

The exterior features brickwork painted to resemble close-studded timber framing, a slate roof, and stacks at the gable end and rear wall. There is a rubble outshut along the back of the house, also covered with an old slate roof. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a five-window range with a three-unit plan, including a storeyed porch positioned to the right of the center. The porch has a round-arched outer entrance and a two-light casement window above it. The left side of the house has three three-light casement windows, all of which are metal casements and appear to have been added later, with two of the lower windows being taller and featuring a high-set transom. There is a similar three-light window on the first floor of the right side unit, with inserted French doors below.

Inside, the layout consists of a large central living room or hall, flanked by smaller rooms on either end. The porch features heavy chamfered joists in the ceiling and includes stone benches on either side. The two rooms on the right retain significant early timber work: the sitting room is divided by a transverse beam, with one half showcasing deeply moulded and chamfered joists, while the other half has plainer chamfered joists. The rear wall fireplace includes a finely carved bressumer with a zig-zag geometric tendril band. The dining room, located at the west end, also features deep chamfered joists.

The interior details of Gungrog Farmhouse are of exceptional quality, making the building particularly interesting for its retention of a 16th-century interior beneath a later vernacular cladding.
