Description
Upper House has origins dating back to the 16th century. It is an L-plan building with two storeys, which originally featured a hall and a jettied crosswing. A two-storey dairy and cellar extension was added to the rear of the wing in the 19th century, along with a single-storey range constructed around 1920 to the right side of the front. The building is primarily timber-framed, with some brick replacements, and has a rendered front elevation. The rear is mainly slate hung, and the roofs are slate, hipped at the front right. There are two projecting side stacks on the wing, one featuring a tall squared rubble upper and a brick end stack on the left gable. The upper windows have metal casements. The front entrance includes a 19th-century framed and boarded door with a flat canopy supported by curved brackets.
Inside, there is a central hallway that features mid-18th century dog-leg stairs with a closed string, a heavy moulded handrail, a square section newel with corner mouldings, and turned balusters. The front room of the crosswing displays a richly moulded beam and wall post. Evidence of timber-framing, such as bressumer beams, soleplates, and close-studded walls, can be seen behind plaster and wallpaper. An exposed chamfered and stopped door frame is located in the south wall of the wing. The room to the left of the hallway contains raised and fielded panelling, along with a door and corner cupboard dating from the mid-18th century. The floors are stone flagged.
