Description

The gate piers and gates to Powis Castle Park are likely from the early 20th century and resemble the Fountain Garden Gate designed by G.F. Bodley in 1912. It is possible that Bodley also designed these gates while working at the castle during the early 20th century.

The main gates and foot-gate are made of cast iron and feature applied wrought iron decoration. They are flanked by ashlar piers and well-coursed, squared walls. The ashlar piers on either side of the main gates have pilaster strips and moulded copings. The ornate paired iron gates include scrolled outer panels, a lock-bar, and an overthrow that incorporates the Powis monogram and coronet, with barbed intermediate rails in each tier. The smaller foot-gate is set into a round-arched opening in the wall on the east side of the main gates and features similarly detailed ironwork. The flanking walls beside the main gates have plain copings that sweep down to plain terminal piers, with the western pier partially concealed on the south side by the retaining wall of the adjacent lodge garden.

This entrance feature is notable for its high-quality ashlar and ironwork, and it holds particular significance due to its association with Powis Castle.
