Description
Moelfre Hall is a 2½-storey farmhouse built from local uncoursed small slate masonry, which includes some larger sandstone blocks. The building features restored slate roofs with lead gutters. The main part of the house, which may be a wing of a 17th-century structure, runs north to south down the slope, with shorter 2½-storey wings located approximately in the center on both the east and west sides.
On the west side, which serves as the principal entrance, there is a wing slightly left of center that has a lean-to on its left and a lateral chimney on its right. This wing also includes a lean-to that functions as a porch. On the east side, there is another wing left of center featuring a large lateral chimney at its left angle, with a bressummer that is now exposed, and a staircase enclosure in the right angle.
All windows have been replaced with timber in a modern design, but the presence of old timber lintels indicates that the positions of the windows have not changed significantly. The original layout of Moelfre Hall is not easily interpreted, but exposed purlins in the attic suggest that this section may predate the now-demolished main range that once extended to the east.
The remaining part of the house includes a kitchen to the north, with the staircase located in the angle of the east wing. Inside, there are attractive exposed timber ceilings, one of which features moulded joists, and open fireplaces. The wide 17th-century staircase spans two storeys and is characterized by large, heavy flat pierced balusters on closed strings, plain rails, and double-width newel posts, some of which have modern heads and pendants.
