Description

The Malt House, which includes numbers 1 and 2 Malthouse Cottages, is a building that originally served as maltings, with two attached cottages on the right. It is constructed from local stone, has a limewashed finish, and features slate roofs along with a rectangular stone chimney.

The front of the maltings has stone steps leading up to a first-floor loading door, with a hoist pole above. To the left of the loading door is a small square window, and to the right are two similar windows. On the ground floor, there are two additional windows that match those above, all of which are slatted.

Adjacent to the maltings are the two former cottages, which are part of the same range but are separated by a straight joint in the masonry. These cottages feature camber-headed casement windows on the first and second floors, a part-glazed door, a casement window at the eaves, a large small-pane window on the ground floor, and a boarded door with a casement window above.

The maltings are arranged in an L-plan, with a smaller drying block at the rear angle between the front block and the crosswing, which was noted to be in poor condition during an inspection in 1999. The gable end of the crosswing has three storeys and features camber-headed windows with brick voussoirs. The rear of the cottages has been modernised.

Inside, the maltings have wooden floors, some supported by beams and others by poles. The rear crosswing contains heavy wooden beams and king post roofs. The rear drying block is in poor condition, with its roof damaged, floors removed, and the ruins of a kiln present.
