Description
Bethel Baptist Church, dated 1849, features a voussoir medallion in the west gable that includes the inscription "Bethel Baptist Chapel Erected AD1849." The building is constructed of coursed squared rubble and has a slate roof. The west gable, which serves as the entrance, has a string-course at the eaves level that creates the appearance of a pediment. It includes a central framed boarded door with a fanlight above, flanked by two high windows with tooled voussoir round-arch heads and fanlight glazing. There are two additional similar windows on the side walls. The roadside elevation has a very narrow, panelled Minister's door set in a recessed arched entrance.
Inside, there is a panelled gallery at the west end supported by two slender iron columns. The dado panelling features horizontally-set beaded boards. The ceiling is supported by a bolted king-post truss at collar height, and the floor is stone flagged. At the east end, there is a raised dais with a later 19th-century reading desk and flanking steps leading up to it. A painted text is displayed behind in an arch framing.
