Description
Lower House is a two-storey building that features a combination of timber framing and rubble construction, topped with a tile roof and flat roofs over rendered blockwork rear additions. The right side has a rebuilt stone end stack. The front elevation showcases closely set framing and retains a jetty supported by a moulded bressummer, ornate carved brackets, and shafted wall-posts. There is a wide ogee-headed doorframe that is partially enclosed by a rubble end wall. The building also has reconstructed ovolo-moulded mullion windows positioned in their original locations.
Originally a single ground-floor room, the interior has been subdivided. It boasts an impressive arrangement of high-quality deep chamfered beams with diagonally-cut stops, with the main beam supported by projecting chamfered wall-posts and counter-changed joists. An inserted stack features chamfered, dressed stone jambs and a timber lintel. The first floor has exposed beams, also with counter-changed joists, which include scroll stops. Notably, the ceiling on this level previously extended only over half the room, creating a crog-loft.
