Description

Morris Cottages comprise a group of ten two-storey cottages arranged in reflected pairs around a central tunnel passage. The cottages date from the 18th century and are constructed of colourwashed rubble stone with slate roofs, some of which have been renewed while others are grouted. The chimney stacks are made of rubble and have weathercourses, some of which are rendered. Most windows are horned sash windows. The first-floor window of number 15 is a small-paned window, while the others have no glazing bars, with the exception of number 23, which features four-paned sashes. Number 23 also has a later small-paned casement window above the passage, and numbers 19 and 21 have modern windows. The ground-floor windows are arched with cambered voussoirs. Original boarded doors have been retained at number 15; the remaining cottages have half-glazed doors, with the modern door at number 21 being recessed, representing a later alteration. A scribed rendered wall marks the left end of the cottages, while the right end is of rubble construction. The rear elevation is of colourwashed rubble with mostly modern windows, lean-to extensions, and a more recent cross range to the left. The passage through the cottages is paved with slate flags and bounded by whitewashed rubble walls. Numbers 19 and 21, and numbers 25 and 27 have been combined to form single properties.
