Description

Cwm Pen Llydan is a former farmhouse dating from the 18th century. It is a two-storey building with a three-window range, constructed from roughly dressed rubble that is laid in courses, topped with a slate roof featuring gable end stacks. The front elevation is asymmetrical, with a doorway located to the left of centre, set within a coursed and squared rubble gabled porch that has shaped bargeboards. Above the doorway is a datestone, and the boarded door is accessed by steps inside the porch.

The lower windows feature arched heads with dressed voussoirs and drip moulds, while the upper windows have shaped timber lintels. All windows are cast-iron with small panes and tiny pivoting opening lights. The principal room to the left of the entrance has a 24-pane window, and there are two 12-pane windows to its right. The upper windows are all 12-pane. The rear elevation mirrors the front, with a gabled porch to the right of centre, aligning the doorway with the front entrance. To the left of this doorway is a 24-pane cast-iron window with a stone voussoir head, and a tiny window immediately to its left. There is a fixed light 4-pane window to the rear of the principal room on the right, beyond which is a small lean-to extension housing a bread oven. Of the three upper windows, only the left one retains its original cast-iron work; the others have been replaced with timber casements. A small lean-to on the northeast gable has a corrugated sheet roof.

The internal layout consists of a main room at the northeast end, a lobby and stairs towards the centre, a small unheated service room, and a heated parlour at the rear to the southwest. The main room features a stone flagged floor and has two fireplaces with timber bressumers, one serving the main hearth and the other a subsidiary hearth that opens into the bread oven. There is a cellar located beneath the parlour and service room.
