Description
This is an L-shaped house and barn, dating from the 17th century. The house is timber framed, standing on a masonry plinth. The timber framing is particularly robust, featuring three rows of square panels filled with brick, with arch braces at the gable and intermediate trusses. The roof is now slate-covered, with a brick stack. The main front entrance, currently unused, has a planked door. A second doorway, with a planked door and simple pitched iron porch, is located to the south, above which is a wide, gabled attic dormer containing paired casement windows. The gable features the inscribed date of 1630. All windows are 20th-century wood casements with square leaded lights, set within earlier openings. A lower masonry and brick range extends from the south end, now covered by a corrugated roof and accessed through stable doors on the front elevation. It has been extended to the rear and features a shallow, single-pitched roof sloping downwards to the north, with a stack in the southwest corner. The north gable end, prominently framed, is four panels wide and designed for visibility, containing two two-light casement windows on both the ground and attic storeys, mirroring the style elsewhere. A diagonal brace is present on the east corner post, and a pronounced jowl on the west. The rear elevation includes a planked door, possibly a later addition, with a decorative wrought iron porch, which appears to have been brought from another location. It also has two two-light casements and a window to the attic storey, close to the eaves.
The barn, which adjoins the east side of the house, is weather-boarded over timber framing on a masonry plinth, under a slate roof. The front of the barn faces the courtyard, featuring three planked doors and an openwork gate. Two hatches provide access to the hay loft above. The east gable end of the barn incorporates an opening for a hatch.
During a partial inspection, the house was entered via a passage from the south doorway. Inside the hall, to the right of the passage, there are exposed timber beams, including a slightly chamfered spine beam with stops and subsidiary joists. At the north end of the hall is a narrow masonry fireplace with a wooden lintel. Access to the barn was not possible at the time of inspection.
