Description

Upper Graig, also known as the Old House, is a two-storey building constructed of rubble stone with a slate roof. It features two end stacks, with the left-hand stack made of brick and the right-hand stack being an original squared rubble stack. There is a new extension built in 1988 on the site of a former attached barn or byre. The house has a three-window range, with a boarded floor to the left of the centre. All windows are modern timber casements, and the upper windows are set in a portion of raised walling.

Much of the original detail remains, including a fine plank and muntin screen that separates the main room from the central staircase hall. The room on the far side of the hall was previously divided to create a rear dairy. There are studwork wall partitions, and modern open stairs have replaced the original staircase. The main room features a large open fireplace with a massive chamfered and stopped timber lintel, which is partially infilled with an inset range and includes a brick-lined bread oven in the corner. The room also has scroll-stopped beams and exposed joists, with large flagstones throughout. The screen is chamfered on the main room side and has straight-cut stops. There is evidence of former bench fixings and a door at the north end, while the south end doorway survives and is adorned with beaded architraving.
