Description
The Old Smithy, located on Wrexham Road, is a two-storey row of cottages dating from the 18th century, featuring five first-floor windows and later rear extensions. The building is constructed of brick and topped with slate roofs, and it has five rectangular brick chimneys.
Nos. 1 and 2 are single-unit cottages with doorways on the right and windows aligned on each floor. The doorways have steep 2-centred arches and boarded doors, while the windows feature round-arched heads with casement glazing that includes two Gothic lights.
No. 3, known as The Old Smithy, is divided into two sections. The left section is a cottage similar to Nos. 1 and 2, while the right section has two windows on the first floor and a doorway styled like the others. The boarded door displays impressions from branding irons, including the name “PEEL,” associated with the owners of Bryn-y-Pys. To the right of this door is a window with three Gothic lights.
On the right return, there is one window at first-floor level that matches the front, along with a small two-light Gothic window. The ground floor features a broad segmental archway that encloses a Gothic doorway on the right and a two-light Gothic window on the left.
The group of buildings is set back from the road, behind narrow forecourts that are enclosed by iron railings and gates.
