Description

The two chest tombs located to the west of the Church of St Giles are made of stone and date from the 18th century. Each tomb features a stepped base with scrolls at the angles of bulbous side panels, and a moulded cornice beneath the upper slab. One tomb has an inscribed upper slab that names John Bradford, a mercer who died in 1726, along with a brass plate that lists John Bradford, a mercer who died in 1789, Samuel Roberts, a mercer who died in 1806, and John Eddowes, a draper who died in 1764. The other tomb does not have an inscription but shows traces of a brass plate that has been removed. Both tombs were previously surrounded by cast iron railings.
