Description

The Bethlehem Independent Chapel is a late 19th-century building, with a Rundbogenstil (round-arched) front applied to an earlier structure. The rear and side elevations reveal the original building as a broad, gabled structure of rough rubble stone with three segmental-headed windows on each floor. The front, dated 1889, features a wide central gable, balanced by a clock tower on the left and a canted stair tower on the right. The construction is rock-faced stone with freestone dressings. The clock tower rises in three stages, exhibiting arcaded windows and a clock set within a blind arcade below a bell-cast spirelet. The recessed central gable has an arcade of three bays at ground floor level, with entrance doors located on either side, set into the projecting towers. Above this, a stepped, triple round-arched window is flanked by single arched lights, and sits above a balustraded string course. The canted stair tower has stepped round-arched windows and paired windows set in squared architraves. A pyramidal roof tops the structure.

Inside, the chapel’s main body is wide, featuring a canted gallery extending around three sides, supported by fluted cast-iron shafts. An arched recess for the organ is embellished with pilasters, capitals, and moulded panels beneath the arch. The organ itself, dating from 1908, was built by Norman and Beard. The ceiling is plain and panelled. The seating was renewed around 1926, when the “set fawr” was removed. Curved steps with turned balusters lead to the pulpit, which has balustraded and fretwork panels.
