Description

The Church of Saint John Evangelist is a Grade II listed building constructed from coursed and squared stone, topped with slate roofs. It is designed in the Norman style and features a cruciform plan that includes a nave, transepts, a chancel, and a bell-tower located at the junction of the south transept and chancel. The nave consists of four bays, each adorned with a broad single-light round-arched window that has engaged recessed shafts and cable-moulded arches. The south entrance is set within a shallow gabled portal that showcases three orders of moulding around the archway. A corbel table runs across the entire building, featuring human and animal heads. The west side has paired windows, while the north and south walls of the transepts contain triple windows. The three-stage bell-tower is distinguished by paired bell-chamber lights set within a chevron moulded archway and is topped with a pyramidal spirelet. To the south of the chancel is a gabled organ chamber, which includes a triple east window with chevron moulding and enriched capitals on engaged shafts.

The Norman style is also reflected in the interior details. The church maintains its cruciform layout with a nave of four bays and a wide crossing leading to the transepts and chancel. The nave is supported by braced collar and queen-post trusses that spring from wall posts, with similar trusses found in the transepts and chancel. The roofs of the nave and transepts intersect above the crossing, supported by a braced central post from crossed principles. The transept arches feature cable and billet moulding, originating from corbelled coupled wall-shafts. The chancel arch mirrors this design but includes full-height shafts and stylised stiff-leaf capitals. The chancel is further enhanced by chevron moulded arcading on the east wall. Many fittings were designed specifically for the church, including choir stalls with arcading on the front bench, an arcaded pulpit, and a plain basin font supported by clustered shafts with cable moulding. The stained glass in the chancel and north transept, created around 1882 by H. Walter Lonsdale, features figurative panels set against a grisaille background.
