Description
The Metcalfe Building, originally constructed in the mid to late 18th century, was possibly built as a row of three houses but is currently used as two shops with accommodation above. The building has been remodeled in the mid 19th century. It features painted brickwork and a slate roof with red tiled cresting. The structure is two and a half storeys high and has a three-window range. The lower shop fronts are recent additions, but the remains of a plat band on the return elevation suggest its 18th-century origins. The first-floor windows are 12-pane sashes with cambered brick heads and stressed key stones, which may also date back to the 18th century. The gabled dormers have 9-pane sashes, and the roof includes dentilled eaves along with end wall and axial stacks, likely part of the 19th-century remodeling.
