Description
The Metcalfe Building, originally possibly constructed as a row of three houses, is now utilized as two shops with accommodation above. It was originally built in the mid to late 18th century but underwent remodeling in the mid 19th century. The building features painted brick and has a slate roof adorned with red tiled cresting. It stands two and a half storeys tall and has a three-window range. The lower shop fronts are recent additions, but remnants of a plat band on the return elevation indicate the building's 18th-century origins. The first-floor windows are 12-pane sashes with cambered brick heads and stressed key stones, which may also date back to the 18th century. The gabled dormers feature 9-pane sashes, and the roof has dentilled eaves along with end wall and axial stacks, likely part of the 19th-century remodeling.
