Description
The Cottage is a 2-storey box-framed house dating from the 18th century. It features square-panelled framing, a slate roof, and an external stack on the left (east) gable end, which has been largely rebuilt and rendered with a brick upper section. On the north front, the lower storey has three unevenly placed 2-light windows, two of which are in earlier openings. The main entrance was previously located between the centre and left-hand windows. The upper storey has two 2-light casements, also in original openings. The left gable end is rendered but retains an exposed tie beam and a narrower roof truss. Attached to the right gable end is a lower 2-storey, 2-window 20th-century addition, which contains the main entrance to the house.
The rear features an outshut on the left side and retains box framing on the right side. Within this framing are 2-light and 1-light windows on both storeys, along with a boarded door at the right end.
Originally, the house had a 2-unit plan, which is still evident. The main room, or hall, on the east side has a stop-chamfered joist-beam ceiling, with the cross beam supported on brackets. The gable-end fireplace features a large timber lintel and is offset to the left side, suggesting a former entrance on its right side where the wall has been rebuilt in brick. A timber-framed partition includes a Tudor-headed doorway and a blocked segmental-headed doorway leading to a former parlour and service room. The roof retains a single closed queen-post truss.
