Description

The Nickson family tombs, located in the churchyard of Hanmer, consist of two similar chest tombs from the early 19th century. The southern tomb is made of freestone and features a faceted slab topped with an urn. The south face has a badly weathered inscription, with the date '1835' being the only clearly legible part. It has corner piers with panels, and on the south side, there is a round arch with sunburst fluting in the spandrels, along with an inscription dedicated to Robert Nickson of Halghton, who died in 1809. The north side also has a round arch and an inscription for Susanna Nickson, who passed away in 1822.

The northern tomb is also constructed from freestone and has a faceted slab. Originally, it featured a central urn, which was detached and placed loosely on the slab during the survey. The south side includes a round arch with fluting in the spandrels and a weathered inscription for John Nickson, who died in 1823. The north side mirrors this with a similar round arch, adorned with cherubs in the spandrels, and a weathered inscription where only the date '1794' is clearly visible. This tomb is surrounded by later cast iron railings on three sides, with the fourth side adjacent to the vicarage, and missing in the northwest angle.
