Description

Burton Buildings is a late 18th century structure, originally featuring shops on the ground floor and accommodation above. The building is constructed of Ruabon brick with terracotta dressings and a slate roof. It has three storeys and five window bays, with a prominent, pedimented central bay housing an entrance to the upper floor rooms, flanked by two original shop fronts. Recessed entrances divide the window spaces asymmetrically within the shop fronts. The windows have segmental angle brackets supported by corbels; the larger windows are divided by a central, slim mullion, and feature small, leaded upper lights. Terracotta brackets are positioned on each side of the fascia, which is topped by an enriched terracotta cornice. The central entrance has a six-panelled door with a fanlight, set within a segmental archway and surmounted by a canopied hood carried on scrolled brackets. The building's name is displayed in relief on the frieze above. The upper floors have paired mullioned and transomed windows, with coloured glass in the leaded upper sections. Continuous moulded sill bands run along the front. A transomed window is set within an architrave above the doorway, and a two-pane sash window is located in the central second-storey window. An enriched terracotta frieze is above the first floor, and foliate panels form the aprons of the upper storey. The terracotta eaves cornice extends to emphasise the central pediment, which is topped by a ball finial. End wall and axial stacks rise from the building, each with corbelled caps.
