Description
The Courtyard, formerly known as Trevalyn Hall Service Wing, is a brick building with stone dressings, set on a stone plinth of five exposed courses. It dates from the 18th century, but was extensively rebuilt in an Elizabethan style to replicate the western elevation of Trevalyn Hall. The building follows an H-plan, with single-storey later additions to the north, south, and western facades. It has two storeys plus an attic storey, with projecting cross wings to the north and south. Large stone mullion and transomed windows are present on both the two-storey sections. Blind attic windows, double-light, are set within stone coped gables featuring tulip-shaped finials. Triangular pediments top the first and attic storey windows, with the first storey pediments bearing armorial bearings. Brick chimney stacks are located on the inside returns of the cross wings. A central section of three bays has large stone four-light transomed and mullioned windows on the second storey, linked via a corridor at first floor level. A single-storey extension to the south wall of the south cross-wing may have served as the principal entrance after the removal of a linking corridor and Porters Lodge in the 1830s. A small single-storey extension to the north wall of the north cross-wing, likely intended as a garden feature, incorporates elements reminiscent of early 19th century Cottage Orne estate houses from the nearby areas of Marford and Rossett, including a blind ogee-arched Gothick window, a Gothick lancet window to the rear wall, a blind arrow slit, and pebbledash render. A garden wall to the northwest retains some render, arrow slits, and a blind triangular pedimented door. The western elevation lacks the decorative detail and symmetry of the other facades, and features a centrally placed chimney stack, a single-storey brick lean-to to the right of the stack, and late 19th/early 20th century wooden multipaned windows. A new entrance, set beneath a new triangular pediment, was constructed in the 1980s. The building is contained within a brick-walled courtyard and was in use as a stable at the time of re-survey.
