Description
Blackhurst Farm features a multi-purpose farm building that includes three lofted farm ranges arranged in an L-plan. The original section consists of a stable aligned north-south, with a cow-house in the east-west range. A later cartshed has been added to the northeast of the cow-house. The original L-plan section is primarily constructed with box framing and diagonal tension braces, sitting on a high plinth made of original hand-moulded brick, which is also used for the nogging.
The north-south range has a roof made of concrete tiles, slate, and corrugated asbestos-cement, while the east-west range has a roof of corrugated asbestos-cement sheets facing the farmyard and slate on the rear side. The stable range includes a short timber-framed section next to the cow-house wing, featuring a split boarded door and a loft door. To the left of this is a likely contemporary brick range near the farmyard entrance, which has a boarded door, a window, and a later large sliding door on the right. This range also has a blocked loading door and a pigeon hole with a ledge in its south gable, along with a boarded loading door at the rear.
In the east-west range, the left-hand end facing the yard has been refaced in brick and includes a tall boarded door. Further right is the lofted cow-house, which has three doorways: a split door, a boarded door, and a doorway without a door. The cow-house features two tiers of breathers in the brickwork and a single inserted loft window on the left. The gable end has a boarded loading door to the loft, while the lower storey is concealed by a corrugated iron lean-to.
Behind the cow-house is the later cartshed, constructed of brick with a slate roof that has a dentilled eaves band. This cartshed is open-fronted to the road and supported by cast-iron posts. The rear elevation is hidden by a later lean-to with a slate roof, which partially obscures a later six-bay cart shed oriented north-south at right angles. This cart shed is also made of brick with a slate roof on dentil eaves and is open-fronted facing the road, supported by cast-iron posts. The opposite (east) side of the cart shed has another later lean-to. The building has not been inspected.
