Description
Fenn's Moss Peat Processing Works is a Grade II* listed building featuring a steel-framed shed with a lightly trussed steel roof, consisting of 9 bays. Originally, the building was clad and roofed in corrugated iron, but it was completely stripped of its external covering at the time of inspection. The floor is raised above the surrounding ground level. On the north side, which faces the former tramway, there are three sliding steel doors. The south side has steel steps leading to a single central former door, with an outshut located to the left of this doorway.
Attached to the west gable end is a lean-to engine house, which is clad in modern corrugated galvanised metal. On the west side of the engine house, there is a steel platform that retains three cast iron tanks, each with a capacity of 1000 gallons, marked with the legend 'Corporation Transport'. Two of these tanks held water, while the third, along with a fourth tank that was removed when the works closed, was used for fuel.
The works still retains most of its original machinery, which was belt driven from a National heavy-oil engine that remains in place. The surviving machinery includes a hammer mill, a crusher, elevators, a rotary screen, and three balers, two of which were made by Webster & Bickerton, and one by Shirtliffe.
