Description
Shifna-hyr Farmhouse is a large two-storey farmhouse featuring an entrance range with a gabled cross wing on the right. The gable end of this cross wing incorporates the gable end and stack of the original house, forming a T-shaped plan that dates back to 1839. An additional wing at right angles on the right side was added by 1870. The farmhouse is constructed from rubble stone with larger quoins and has a slate roof.
The symmetrical main range has two windows and a coped gable on the left, adorned with stone finials at the eaves and apex, along with a central brick ridge stack. It features three-light mullioned windows with hood moulds. The central boarded door is topped with an overlight and a tablet displaying the arms of the Davies-Cooke family. The gable end of the cross wing on the right has an original stack with a tall square shaft that has been partly rebuilt, and there is a two-light window on the right side of the base. The gable line of the original house is lower than the current structure and includes an integral buttress on the right side. The right side wall of the cross wing has a horizontal-sliding sash window in the upper storey above a half-glazed lean-to porch, which contains a replaced door and window. The right-hand wing also has a horizontal sliding sash window in the upper storey beneath a stone lintel.
The left gable end of the main range is roughcast. The rear of the house is built into a steep bank and features a pivoting light beneath the eaves, with an added one-and-a-half-storey outshut to the left. This outshut has large quoins, a horizontal-sliding sash window in the attic, and a boarded door below. Its lateral wall has a replaced window beneath a stone lintel. The gabled cross wing has a brick end stack, and there are monopitched former pig sties against the gable end, with walled pens that have partially missing slate roofs. The side wall of the cross wing contains horizontal sliding sashes on both storeys. The rear elevation of the right-hand wing has a boarded-up window in the lower storey.
