Description

The Town Hall is a two-storey building constructed from brown stone, featuring ashlar on the southeast and northwest ends, and squared rubble on the sides, topped with a slate roof. The windows are generally casement with diamond panes. The entrance on the southeast side is flanked by octagonal turrets that have loops and three-centred doorways. Between the turrets is a stepped gable with a pinnacle, and a broad archway that overhangs a first-floor window of three lights, with the central light higher than the others, leading to a balcony with an iron balustrade. The former entrance doorway has a deep arch.

The lean-to wings have three-centred arched doorways and windows, along with corner octagonal buttresses. The first-floor returns feature square-headed windows, while the ground floor has three-centred arches. The southwest and northeast elevations each have two gables, with four three-centred arched windows or doors on the ground floors. The first floor on the railway side has an arched window to the left and two windows to the right, with a small attic window above. On the town side, the first floor has four square-headed windows and a small attic window. The northwest elevation mirrors the main entrance but includes turrets framing an attic window with a hoodmould and a triple first-floor window above the ground floor arch. Beyond the turrets on each side are three-centred arched windows, with small turrets at the ends.

The ground floor has been modernised, while the first floor retains the council chamber, which features a hammer beam roof. The ceiling of the Mayor’s parlour displays heraldry representing the Tribes of Wales.
