Description

The Palace Social Club, formerly known as the Plaza Cinema, is a building constructed in the 1930s. Its brown brick front features five framed grilles, with the three central grilles being square and adorned with reliefs of music-making allegorical figures: Pan, a Merman, and an Angel. These three are flanked by rectangular grilles and smaller unframed vents, which continue along the brown brick for approximately four meters. Above the canopy, there is a deep frieze band. The entrance doors are centrally set and have horizontal glass panels. Each corner of the front includes a small shop. The sides and rear of the building are made of common brick and have simple openings.

The interior from the 1930s remains largely intact, except for the removal of the screen and stalls. The entrance lobby features a polygonal pay-box and a green and white tiled floor. There is a step up to the foyer, which has an asymmetrically coved ceiling, with stairs at each end leading to the balcony. The auditorium boasts an undulating acoustic ceiling. Above the proscenium are reliefs depicting the signs of the Zodiac, with three columns featuring horizontal ribbing on each side. The side walls curve back to accommodate emergency doorways before breaking forward and curving beneath the balcony. At the lower level, there is horizontal banding, while the upper level displays low-reliefs symbolizing entertainment, such as a clown, a trumpeter, and an athlete. The curved balcony front has a brass rail, with balcony seating and brass handrails leading to the stairs.
