Description
Flint Castle, a Grade I listed ruin, is constructed from brown, yellow, and red stone quarried from the site and across the River Dee on the Wirral. The inner bailey is almost square, measuring approximately 50 meters east to west and 40 meters north to south, featuring corner towers. The medieval curtain wall remains to the south, with modern sections at the northwest corner, following the line of the original walls. The south curtain wall includes arched openings to the north, arrow slits, and the remnants of a gatehouse to the east, along with two similar openings in the northwest wall and traces of others.
Round towers, approximately 11 meters in diameter, are quarter-engaged in the curtain wall at the southwest, northwest, and northeast corners, with remains of stairs and arrow slits. The bailey contains the foundations of buildings and a well. At the southeast corner stands a unique great tower, or donjon, with an approximate diameter of 20 meters. The basement and part of one upper floor survive, although there is evidence that the tower originally rose higher. A stone vaulted passage leads down to the central chamber of the tower, which features arrow slits, latrine chutes, and a well to the south. One of the five radial first-floor rooms served as a chapel, facing east, and includes a stoup and the springing for a barrel vault.
To the southwest of the castle is a section of the revetment wall of the ditch, which formed a tidal moat for the former outer bailey. Opposite Castle Street, modern steps are located on the site of the gateway, with higher masonry to the right. The wall runs parallel to Castle Ditch Street for approximately 120 meters, becoming broken towards the north, before turning at right angles at the southeast end for 30 meters.
